Abhaya case to become Hindi movie

The murder case of Catholic Sister  Abhaya that has intrigued people in Kerala for the past 25 years will soon become subject of a Bollywood movie. 

The screenplay of the movie will be based on Abhaya Case Diary, the autobiographical work of Jomon Puthenpurackal, a human rights activist who persistently campaigned for investigations in the case.

Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan is likely to play the lead role, which Aditya Joshi and Ajay Chhabria are planning to make, reported

Aditya Joshi has already met Jomon to discuss the case and develop the script accordingly.

According to Puthenpurackal, an incident like Abhaya case, which has dragged on for as long as 25 years, needs to be discussed on a bigger platform.

“Cinema is the medium to narrate a complicated story like that of sister Abhaya’s. This will be the first of its kind in Indian history,” he said.

Jomon will receive a royalty of Rs 10 Lakh for the movie screenplay that will be based on his autobiography.

Irrfan will play Puthenpurackal in the movie that is expected to be complete in a year’s time.

Sister Abhaya's body was found in the well of her Pius Tenth Convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992. The local police and Crime branch after the investigation closed the case as suicide.

After a year, in 1993, the case was re-opened and investigation concluded it a murder.

In 2008, investigators accused two priests—Fathers Thomas Kottoor and Jose Poothrikkayil  and a nun Sister Sephy—in the case and arrested them.

In 2009 investigation submitted the charge sheet. The case at present is under trial in the CBI special court. The case will be considered again on November 13.
